Sauropots

Sauropots - unique to Lightning Ridge - putting the dinos back on the clay they once walked upon.

Our beautiful sauropots are made at Lightning Ridge by two renowned artistic collaborators, potter Graeme Anderson and artist + palaeontologist Dr Elizabeth Smith.

Sauropots are made using clay that Graeme dug from the opal mines, prepared, then stored back underground to undergo mysterious chemical changes before being ready for his pottery wheel. It's clay that formed 100 million years ago; clay that produces precious opal and opalised fossils; clay from which Graeme has thrown more than 50,000 pots in the last half century.

Now, a precious few of these pots have been further elevated by Elizabeth’s artwork, which takes inspiration from the ancient world revealed by opalised fossils in the Australian Opal Centre collection. The name ’sauropot’ is a play on the name of sauropod dinosaurs.

Each sauropot is unique - a labour of love and many hours of work. Your sauropot will come with a card showing its name and year of making. Sauropots have been made and exhibited in limited numbers since 2011. They are highly sought and can be found in collections around the world.
