Sauropots – Uniquely Lightning Ridge

This beautiful pot was hand made and fired in Lightning Ridge by potter Graeme Anderson and decorated by artist and palaeontologist Dr Elizabeth Smith, taking inspiration from the ancient world of the opalised fossils in the Australian Opal Centre collection.

Sauropots are pots made using clay from the Lightning Ridge opal mines. The clay - formed over 100 million years ago - was dug and prepared by Graeme, then wrapped up and stored underground to undergo further mysterious chemical changes until finally being ready for the pottery wheel. It's the same clay the dinosaurs once walked on, and that today produces precious opal and opalised fossils. The name 'sauropot' is a play on the name of sauropod dinosaurs.

These are very special pots. Each sauropot is unique and comes with a card bearing its name and year of making. Sauropots have been made and exhibited in limited numbers since 2011. They are now in collections all over the world.
