***********************************

There’s an exciting new arts project happening in Lightning Ridge during 2016, and it’s called SPARK.

SPARK will be a brilliant audiovisual installation, created in Lightning Ridge and  presented under the stars at the Three Mile opal field, Lightning Ridge, from mid July to mid September 2016. Audiences will be spellbound by SPARK’s multimedia celebration of the natural, cultural and technological heritage of Lightning Ridge’s opal fields, their opal and people.

SPARK is a production of the Australian Opal Centre, with Arts & Cultural Project funding support from Arts NSW.

Two outstanding visiting artists, Vic McEwan and Martin Fox, will work with local school students and other artists to create SPARK.

SPARK will be enjoyed by large numbers of residents and visitors during a two-month season in Lightning Ridge, before travelling to Dubbo in October for ArtLands, Australia’s national regional arts conference and festival.

Mechanical flipbooksCRAFTassembled-300x298

During two free workshops, learn how to make a mechanical flipbook that tells a visual story about opal mining. The flipbooks will be exhibited during SPARK and may be used in the audiovisual presentation. Participants can create a flipbook out of photos, drawings, or a combination of both. This is an exciting opportunity to express and develop your creativity and hone your technical skills. Only 10 places available. To register or find out more, contact Clytie Smith at sclytie@hotmail.com or 0476 714 037.

Artist talks

In June 2016, during the development period for SPARK, artists Vic McEwan and Martin Fox talk will give talks at Lightning Ridge about their artistic practices and careers. For your invitation to this free event, email programs@australianopalcentre.com and ask to join the free SPARK mailing list, to receive all SPARK notifications. This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet Vic and Martin, and to gain insights from these talented and successful artists.

School workshops

As part of SPARK, artist Vic McEwan will run workshops with music and art students at Lightning Ridge Central School. Vic will work with talented year 8 Art students to create beautiful work for incorporation into SPARK. Year 7 Music students will teach Vic about opal mining as he teaches them how to record the sounds of mining machinery. These unique Lighting Ridge sounds will become the soundtrack for SPARK.

Design A Dinosaur Competition

The Australian Opal Centre is running a Design A Dinosaur Competition at schools across Walgett Shire and Hebel. Finalists’ works will be exhibited for everyone to admire and may be used in SPARK. The competition offers cash prizes and gives all students an opportunity to get involved.
